DESCRIPTION:STICK MEN \nFeaturing Tony Levin (Chapman Stick) and Pat Mastelotto (drums) the powerhouse rhythm section of KING CRIMSON joined by Markus Reuter on guitar. Band feature some incredible King Crimson tunes. \nStick Men is a rock trio like no other. Playing instruments not seen or heard every day\, and writing captivating and challenging music\, they embody the tradition of progressive rock. \nStick Men are a progressive rock band created from musicians with extensive experience playing together. Pat Mastelotto and Tony Levin are the rhythm section of the legendary band King Crimson. Mastelotto is in demand all over the world as the premier drummer for progressive rock. Levin plays the unusual instrument\, the 12 string Chapman Stick\, in Crimson\, and with Peter Gabriel and others. Markus Reuter is a composer/guitarist who designed and plays his own unique touch style guitar. \nPROG NOIR TOUR 2018 \nDietro al sinistro giustiziere in trench di copertina – una sorta di Rorschach dalla testa luminescente – si nasconde un super-gruppo altrettanto intimidatorio\, formato da alcuni membri del passato e del presente dei King Crimson: Tony Levin (Chapman Stick\, voce)\, Pat Mastelotto (batteria) e Markus Reuter (touch guitar). Il nome della band si riferisce presumibilmente al Chapman Stick\, perno sonoro della sua proposta musicale\, anche se è doveroso ricordare come in passato sia già apparsa sulle scene una formazione omonima di “uomini bastone”\, quella guidata da Peter Baker negli anni Ottanta.\nCon quattro album in studio già all’attivo\, in “Prog Noir” il trio decide tuttavia di compiere una piccola metamorfosi e aggiunge alle proprie strumentali arie di bravura anche la voce narrante di Tony Levin\, che tinge il panorama di una certa atmosfera noir. Alle turbolenze ritmiche si amalgama pertanto anche una componente più melodica\, oscura e mai definita\, che va quasi a colmare il ruolo sinfonico affidato generalmente nel prog alle tastiere. D’altronde\, lo scopo degli Stick Men è quello di sorprendere l’ascoltatore e portarlo nella frontiera tra il progressive\, la fusion e il metal\, guardando così nella profonda voragine tra la tradizione classica e la musica del futuro. Il fatto che riescano a farlo senza sacrificare gli elementi propri del progressive (tempi dispari\, virtuosismo tecnico\, sotto-sezioni) ma\, anzi\, rendendoli accattivanti e portandoli all’interno del minutaggio standard della forma-canzone (dai 4 ai 6 minuti) è già di per sé un piccolo trionfo. \nL’album inizia con la title track\, maestosa e satura introduzione in stile crimsoniano e\, infatti\, anche con “Mantra” la band non confuta il suo recente passato\, ma lo utilizza piuttosto per tessere nuove armonie e impostare il tono dell’album\, usando il logos del progressive per evocare il primordiale pathos del mistero. La minacciosa “Plutonium” ripercorre a ritroso tradizioni ancora più distanti\, incorporando caroselli spettrali di Carl Orff (“Carmina Burana”) e Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (“Ouverture 1812”)\, oltre a una citazione degli Yes (“Roundabout). Non mancano neppure riferimenti al Re Cremisi per antonomasia\, Robert Fripp\, nelle chitarre robotiche del singolo “The Tempest”\, anche se la vera bufera si scatena in “Schattenhaft”\, grazie alla devastante batteria al metronomo di Pat Mastelotto. \nC’è spazio anche per le improvvisazioni ambientali di “Rose In The Sand/Requiem”\, effimera parentesi prima della virtuosistica lambada di “Leonardo” in cui\, tra colori violenti e linee spezzate in stile fauves\, il trio ha voluto omaggiare il suo manager\, Leonardo Pavkovic. Trey Gunn\, un altro illustre maestro del Chapman Stick e membro della grande famiglia dei King Crimson\, viene invece elogiato nell’urban-prog dai scenari discopici di “Trey’s Continuum”.\nChiudono “Embracing The Sun” e “Never The Same”; se la prima\, strumentale\, riflette le sonorità iterate e suggestive dei dischi anni Ottanta del Re Cremisi (“Discipline”\, “Beat”)\, la seconda crea invece una inossidabile sinergia metal tra strumenti e voce\, rasentando le atmosfere dei migliori Dream Theater.
